Module 01 - Paddling Basics:

HULL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

Like your vehicle’s license plate, the Hull Identification Number (HIN) on your paddle craft is used for identification purposes. The HIN helps police find stolen or lost boats and it helps manufacturers locate boats if there has been a product recall.

All watercraft made in the U.S. after 1972 (with or without a motor) must have a HIN. This number is 12 digits long and must be permanently marked on the starboard (right) corner of the stern. It’s illegal to deface, alter or remove the HIN from your motorized boat or paddle craft.

The HIN identifies:

  • The boat model.
  • The serial number.
  • The month and year the boat was made.
  • The boat manufacturer.

Note: SUP Boards are currently exempt from the HIN requirement.
