Knowing your playground is as important as knowing your machine. Many sleds have the capability and power to go just about anywhere. So you need to know what to expect from your machine and from the ground beneath you when riding on different types of winter terrain.

You’ll get the most out of your ride by first evaluating what you’ll be up against. First, choose an off-road location that matches your skill level and the skill level of your group, then...

assess the following factors related to that location: 

• Are there existing trails? Are they open for use? Do you need a permit to ride there?
• What influence will the time of year and the weather have on the trail conditions?
• Always keep out of areas where you’re not meant to ride, like protected environmental areas and places where there are slopes that are too steep for your machine to handle.

No matter what type of terrain you’re up against, always approach hills, turns and obstacles cautiously, ESPECIALLY when riding on a new trail for the first time.
